Curriculum Guide for the Week of June 10- 13th

Third Grade Curriculum Update

Date: June 10, 2013 

Virtue of the Month:  Lives to Learn From   * 

These are the subjects and content area the students will be studying this  
week.  Please make sure that your child goes over these areas of study with 
you.  

Saxon Math: Review and memorization of multiplication and division facts 0-12.* 

Science: Hermit crabs and ghost shrimp comparison.  Continue with the 
observations and study of the hermit crabs.  * 

History: Finish up the Unit on The Thirteen Colonies.  Review of all the chapters.  
Open Book Test on Tuesday. * 

English:  Journal writing. Cursive handwriting. Contractions.  Review more on 
homophones. * 

Check folder for: Reminders, information for June and corrected work to be filed 
in their 3 ring binders.   

Reminders: Monday our play, “Trouble At Jamestown”, will be presented at 2:00 
in the classroom. Hope to see you all there. Itʼs around 20 minutes.  The end of 
the school year sundae party is on Wednesday at 1:30. Thursday we will walk 
down to the church for mass at 9:00 and then immediately following will be an 
awards ceremony.  The children need to be dressed in their SHA uniform and 
come to school at 8:00.  Dismissal of school is approximately 11:15 on Thursday, 
right after the blessing and final good bye to SHA.  Have a safe and Happy 
Summer!   I will miss all of your kiddos.

Curriculum Guide for the Week of June 3 - 7th

Third Grade Curriculum Update

Date: June 3, 2013 

Virtue of the Month:  Lives to Learn From  * 

These are the subjects and content area the students will be studying this 
week.  Please make sure that your child goes over these areas of study with 
you.  

Saxon Math: Review of math lessons.  Mastering Multiplication facts 0-12. 
Division review.  *  

Science: Unit on Ecology. Review of test.  Observing their hermit crabs and 
setting up their habitat.  Keeping care of their hermit crabs.  What do they need 
for survival? What is the difference between a ghost shrimp and hermit crab?  

History: Unit on The Thirteen Colonies.  Read and discuss lessons on Plymouth: 
the Pilgrim colony, the Massachusetts Bay Colony, living in the Puritan Colony 
and the story of Rhode Island. The children will be practicing their performance of 
“Trouble At Jamestown” all week.  * 

Religion: The church is a witness for Justice and Peace, the good Samaritan, 
servant of slaves, and the ten Commandments. 

Literature: Read and discuss the stories Three Words of Wisdom and William 
Tell. The children will read and talk about their cereal box book report throughout 
the week.    * 

English:  Journal writing. Cursive handwriting.  Grammar- Adjectives and  
adverbs.  Phonics- Lesson 33 on prefixes.  * 

Vocab./ Spelling:  Vocab.- Unit 14 on definitions, synonyms and antonyms of 
words, completing the sentence and word associations. Spelling- Lesson 33 on 
words with prefixes.  Last Spelling Test on Friday.  * 

Art: Peaceful Solutions lesson talking about symbols, depth, texture, framing of
the picture, and the foreground, middleground and background.  Drawing their 
own Peaceable Kingdoms.  *

Reminders: ½ day of school is Friday with dismissal at noon and Free Dress.    
The School Rummage Sale is Saturday and Sunday.  9 more days of school!!!

Curriculum Guide for the Week of May 27-May 31st

These are the subjects and content area the students will be studying this 
week.  Please make sure that your child goes over these areas of study with 
you.  

Saxon Math: Lessons 134-135 and Assessment 26 on identifying place value to 
millions, estimating a large collection by sampling and review of 1-12 
multiplication facts.  * 

Science: Unit on Ecology.  Read and discuss about conservation and recycling, 
food cycles, the hermit crab structures, and ecosystems. Learn more about the 
hermit crab and its habitat.  The students will continue to observe and take care 
of a hermit crab for the month. Field Trip to Torrey Pines Nature Reserve is 
Wednesday and to the SD River to go ghost shrimping on Friday! 

History:  Unit on The Thirteen Colonies.  Read and discuss lessons 7- 9 on 
plantations in South Carolina, plantations and slavery, and the story of Georgia. * 

Religion: - World peace, Zacchaeus , the tax collector, Luke 19:1-10, and the 
Pope.  

Literature:  Read and discuss Sarah Mortonʼs Day and The Little Match Girl.  * 

English:  Journal writing. Cursive handwriting. Prefixes and suffixes and 
contractions with not. Phonics – Lesson 32 on vcvcv or vcccv in long words.  * 

Vocab./ Spelling:  Vocab.- Unit 13 on definitions, synonyms and antonyms of 
words, completing the sentence and word associations.  Spelling- Lesson 32.  
Spelling Test and Vocab. Test on Friday.  * 

Computers: Computer class Tuesday completing research on hermit crabs and 
multiplication fact games. *

Reminders: No School on Monday for Memorial Day.  Our Field Trips to Torrey 
Pines Nature Reserve is on Wednesday and the SD River on Friday.  Teachers 
against the eighth graders Volleyball game on Friday at 1:45.  What a fun 
learning week!

Saxon Math: Lessons 131-133 on writing hundredths using common and 
decimal fractions, dividing a two-digit number by a one-digit number with a 
remainder, and simplifying expressions with addition, subtraction, multiplication 
and division.  * 
  
Science: Unit on Ecology.  Read and discuss about the hermit crab structures, 
and ecosystems. The students will each have a hermit crab or one to share to 
observe and take care of for the month.  We will observe the hermit crab 
structures, behavior, and habitat.   Ecology Test on Wednesday.  * 

History:  Unit on The Thirteen Colonies. Read and discuss lessons 3-6 on 
Captain John Smith, changing times in Jamestown, Virginia succeeds, and 
Maryland: a refuge for Catholics.  * 

Religion: Read and discuss about how we can serve the Lord, we pray 
throughout the day, a lay person, and devotions and blessings.  

Literature: Read and discuss biographies on Nicolaus Copernicus, John Muir, 
Alexander Graham Bell and Mae Jemison. Read Stickeen by John Muir.   * 

English:  Journal writing. Cursive handwriting. Grammar- Irregular verbs. 
Phonics- Lesson 31 on vcvccv or vccvcv words. * 

Vocab./ Spelling:  Vocab.- Unit 13 on definitions, synonyms and antonyms of 
words, completing the sentence and word associations. Spelling- Lesson 31 on 
vcvccv and vccvcv words .  Spelling Test on Friday.  * 

Art: The Peaceable Kingdom by Edward Hicks.  *

These are the subjects and content area the students will be studying this 
week.  Please make sure that your child goes over these areas of study with 
you.  

Saxon Math: Lessons 128-130 and Assessment 25 on adding positive and 
negative numbers, creating a coordinate plane, graphing points on a coordinate 
plane, rounding numbers to the nearest thousand, and comparing and ordering 
numbers to 10,000.  * 

Science: Unit on Ecology.  Read and discuss about the natural world.  How 
living things depend upon each other, how natural cycles work, and a web of 
living things.  Learn about the crayfish and its habitat.  The students will each 
have a hermit crab to observe and take care of for the month.  * 

History:  Start Unit on The Thirteen Colonies.  Read and discuss lessons 1- 3 on 
the English colonies, starting the Virginia Colony, and Captain John Smith.  * 

Religion: The children who want to and who have made their first Holy 
Communion will begin getting trained for altar serving with Betty and Deacon 
Mark.  The church is a sign of the kingdom of God, Jesus describes Godʼs 
kingdom, an invitation to the kingdom, eternal life, and the mustard seed.   

Literature: Read and discuss the stories, Stickeen by John Muir, Sarah Mortonʼs 
Day , The Little Match Girl, and If You Lived in Colonial Times.  * 

English:  Journal writing. Cursive handwriting. Prefixes and suffixes. Phonics- 
Lesson 30- more sight words.  * 

Vocab./ Spelling:  Vocab.- Unit 13 on definitions, synonyms and antonyms of 
words, completing the sentence and word associations. Spelling- Lesson 30 on 
more sight words.  Spelling Test and Vocab. Test on Friday.  *

week.  Please make sure that your child goes over these areas of study with

Saxon Math: Lessons 125-128 and Assessment 25 on determining unit cost, 
division facts: dividing by 6,8, and 9, locating information on a map, showing 
addition, subtraction, and multiplication on a number line, identifying units of 
measure for long distances, using a scale on a map, and adding positive and 
negative numbers.  * 

Science: Unit on Ecology.  Read and discuss about conservation and recycling, 
the hermit crab structures, and ecosystems. Learn about the lives of famous 
scientists: Nicolaus Copernicus, John Muir, and Alexander Graham Bell. Learn 
about the hermit crab and its habitat.  The students will each have a hermit crab 
to observe and take care of for the month.  * 

History:  Finish up Unit on The First Explorers.  Test on Tuesday.  * 

Religion: Read and discuss Session 24 on All Life is Sacred.  Pentecost and the 
gifts of the Holy Spirit.”  

Socratic Seminar- Lesson 16- Public behavior and private behavior.  *

These are the subjects and content area the students will be studying this  
week.  Please make sure that your child goes over these areas of study with 
you.  

Saxon Math: Lessons 121-124 and Assessment 23 on finding the volume of a 
rectangular prism, and dividing two- and three- digit multiples of 10 by a one-digit 
number, locating negative numbers on a number line, and dividing a two-digit 
number by a one-digit number.  * 

History:  Unit on The Explorers- Chapters 5 and 6 on John Cabot and Henry 
Hudson and Champlain and New France. * 

Religion:   Read and discuss Chapter 16 on We pray for faith, Stephen is called 
to serve, Joan of Arc, and what a creed is.  Memorize the Bible verse: Psalm 
119:19, “ I am but a pilgrim here on earth: how I need a map- and your 
commands are my chart and guide.”  

Literature: Read and discuss the stories, The People Could Fly, Three Words of 
Wisdom, William Tell, and The River Bank.  Learn the saying, “The show must go 
on.”  * 

English:  Journal writing. Cursive handwriting. Phonics- Lesson 28 on vv or vv 
with other syllable division patterns.  * 

Vocab./ Spelling:  Vocab.- Unit 11- on definitions, synonyms and antonyms of
