Curriculum Update for the week of Sept. 4-7

Sacred Heart Academy Third Grade Curriculum Update Date: Sept. 4, 2012 Dear Parents, These are the subjects and content areas your child will be studying this week. Please make sure that your child goes over these areas of study with you. Virtues of the Month: Respect and Responsibility.  * Saxon Math: Lessons 1-5 on telling and showing time to the hour, solving elapsed-time problems, graphing data on a bar graph, reading a bar graph, identifying digits and writing two-digit numbers, telling and showing time to the half hour, identifying addends, sums, and the commutative property of addition, addition facts: adding 0, adding 1, and doubles, and identifying a missing addend.  * History: Start unit on Canada.  Lesson 1 and 2 on Visiting Canada and The story of Canada and places in Canada. *                                                           Religion:  Session 1- Created to be Happy. Science:  Classification of Animals – the characteristics of mammals, fish, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. *                                                         Reading: Read Gloria Who Might Be My Best Friend, Knowledge about friendship.  Fiction and Nonfiction.  Phonics- Lesson 1- consonants, and initial and final sounds.  *                                                                                                            English: Sentences, Statements and Questions, Question Words, Commands. *                                                  Vocab./ Spelling:  Becoming familiar with their textbooks and the contents in them; where to find what.  Review of how a unit is laid out in Vocabulary and how a lesson is in Spelling. * Art & Music:  Name in block letters.  Music will start next week. Computers: Computer classes on Monday will start next week. Check folder for: Reminders, information for Sept., and completed and corrected work to be filed in the children’s 3-ring binder. Reminders: Don’t forget…This Friday is a half day with dismissal at 12:00 and Free Dress.  Mrs. Tollefson’s welcome dinner is this Saturday at the parish hall at 5:30.  Please RSVP with dinner count ASAP.  Next Monday is picture day for class pictures.  All students should be in SHA school uniforms, no PE uniforms. Tuesday is individual pictures. Also, our In Home Meeting is Thursday, Sept. 20th at 6:30 P.M. at the Lutosky’s home.
