Third Grade Curriculum Update

These are the subjects and content area the students will be studying this
week. Please make sure that your child goes over these areas of study with
you.
Virtue of the Month: Perseverance (Enduring Adversity) *
Saxon Math: Lessons 79-82 and Assessment 15 on selecting coins for a given
amount, subtraction facts of 7, 8, and 9, making reasonable predictions by
collecting and analyzing data, finding square roots of perfect squares, finding the
length of the side of a square given the area, and adding money amounts
(decimals). *
Science: The Solar System- the earth and the moon, and exploring the moon.
Moon phases - waxing and waning. *
Social Studies: Ancient Rome. Read and discuss Chapters 9-11 on Roman
Lands, Roads, Bridges, and Aqueducts, and the Buildings of Rome. *
Religion: Session 14- on Mary is Holy. The Rosary, events in the lives of Jesus
and Mary, the Annunciation, Communion of Saints, and the Visitation.
Literature: Read the myths: Cupid and Psyche, The Sword of Damocles, Damon
and Pythias, and Androcles and the Lion. *
Socratic Seminar: Lesson 9- the confessions- Why is it tempting to do things
we are not supposed to do? *
English: Start writing god and goddess reports with the 6th graders. Journal
writing. Grammar- review of subjects and predicates and singular and plural
nouns. Phonics- Lesson 17 on Trigraphs and Quadrigraphs. Cursive
handwriting. *
Vocab./ Spelling: Vocab.- Unit 7 on definitions, synonyms and antonyms on
words, completing the sentence and word associations. Spelling- on trigraphs
and quadrigraphs. Spelling Test on Fri. *
Art: Art- Valentine art and Roman soldiers. *
Check White Envelope for: Reminders, information for February, and corrected work to be
filed in their 3 ring binders.
Reminders: Thanks for all of your help and prayers last week with Mrs. Zapata
being here taking my place. It was a busy Catholic Schools week, but the kids all
had fun and earned a great report from her. Have a super week!
